The restored buildings after the first permanent northern lights observatory in the world are located on the mountain top Haldde in Kåfjord, Alta municipality. On clear days the view from the top is amazing, both towards the inland and out over the Alta fjord.

The observatory building has sleeping places for up to ten people. The World Heritage Rock Art Centre– Alta Museum is responsible for maintenance and renting to visitors.

The beds are equipped with pillows and blankets. The guest should bring a sleeping bag and/or a travel sheet. The kitchen is equipped with pots, plates, cutlery, and other utensils for cooking. There is no food storage on Haldde. All food must be brought by the guests, including water if you do not want to use the natural water supplies. Snow can be thawed and used for water in the wintertime.

Water can be collected from the natural cistern close to the buildings, or from the nearby river. Snow can be used in the wintertime. Gas is available for cooking, but it cannot be used for heat. Wood can be collected from the wood storage. There is no other way to heat the building. On departure from Haldde the observatory must be cleaned and tidied. Floors, tables and the kitchen area must be washed. Garbage must be brought back down.

Haldde is 904 meters above sea level and there is no drivable way up. The trip back and forth is physically demanding and can at times be dangerous. Even though the weather is good in Kåfjord, it can be stormy on Haldde. Snow slides can occur in certain areas on the way up to Haldde in the wintertime. It is not advised to take the trip in extremely bad weather. It is important to consider weather forecasts before the trip.

The hike to Haldde and the stay there takes place at your own risk!
