In order to disseminate and show the complexity of the rock art in Alta in the best possible way, good documentation is necessary. The World Heritage Rock Art Centre – Alta Museum is working on developing different methods for documenting the rock art.  We have chosen photography as a basis for all documentation, because it is the method that we find the most suitable for covering the demands that documentation must meet. By photographing the same areas and carvings under different light and moisture conditions, different aspects of the carvings are documented. This is then supplemented with photographs of the carvings traced with a mixture of water and quartz powder. Individual carvings, parts of and whole rock surfaces and surroundings are subject to a photographic documentation that is as thorough as possible. Afterwards these photographs can be digitally treated to emphasize various aspects of the carvings that we wish to make clearer. Good documentation is, as already mentioned, very important for dissemination. During the last few years the connection between the rock surfaces and the carvings has become more and more evident. It is also important to document the condition of the rock surfaces, so that we can preserve them more effectively.
